Lesson Notes:  Philippians  2:17-18 (NIV based)

READ: Philippians 2:17-18, with vv.12-16 for context

v.17
What does Paul mean that if he is "being poured out like a drink offering?
- - that he may have to give his life as he ministers to the Philippian saints and others.

What does Paul mean "on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith"?

Why is Paul "glad and rejoicing with all of [the Philippian saints]"?
- - because they are being sanctified - "becoming blameless and pure" before God;
(v.15)
- - because he has been helping them become more sanctified and godly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.18
Why should the Philippian saints "be glad and rejoice" with Paul?
- - because they are becoming more Christ-like, more pleasing to God;
(v.5)
- - because Paul has been sent by God to help them, for their benefit;
- - because Paul's "sacrifice, service"
(v.17), and "labor" (v.16) for the "faith" (17) of the Philippians were successful and produced fruit (v.12).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If we minister to others, do we have to pay a price like Paul did?  If so, then why would we want to minister to others if we have to pay a price?

If we minister to others, could we experience "gladness and rejoicing"?
(v.18)

If we minister to others, could we experience some kind of substantial and long-lasting sense of accomplishment "on the day of Christ that we did not run or labor for nothing"?
(v.16)

If we minister to others, could we experience some kind of substantial and long-lasting recognition from others in heaven that we labored, sacrificed, and served for such accomplishments of the faith of others?
(vv.16,17)

If we minister to others, would others be glad and rejoice that we are ministering to them?

Are you glad and rejoice when others minister to you?  Or do you complain and criticize?
(v.14)
