LESSON - JONAH 3:1-4:11 (NIV based)
THEME - Characteristics of anger
OBJECTIVE - to search for the characteristics and make
personal comparisons/applications
READ ALOUD: Chapter 3
CHAPTER 4
v.1 Jonah is angry
v.2 KEY VERSE; cf Exodus 34:6-7; desire to be in control
v.3,8 suicidal tendencies, despondent
v.4 does Jonah have any right to be angry?
v.4-5 can't be reasoned with
v.5 can't see the broader picture, focuses only on the immediate
problem; desires to strike back & hurt others, (take revenge?)
vv.5-8 does stupid things: gets a good seat to watch their
destruction, physically endangers himself thru exposure
vv.5-9 lives in the immediate present - one minute angry, next
happy, next angry
v.6 happy only when personally physically comfortable, when
things are going his way
v.8-9 says things he should not
v.8-11 doesn't think clearly - wanted to die over a vine &
over repentant sinners
OTHER QUALITIES: selfish, complaining, stubborn, unteachable,
depressed, impatient, rebellious, sulking, tantrum
QUESTIONS:
1. What is Jonah's sin in
chapters 3-4?
2. Why was Jonah angry? v.4:1-3
Did he have a good reason? vv.4:4,9
3. Why was Jonah angry about
the vine? v.4:8-9
4. Why did Jonah want to
die? v.4:3
5. Do we ever have a right
to be angry at God?
6. What was the principle
God was trying to teach Jonah thru the vine?
vv.4:10-11
BIG IDEA:
God has compassion on the wicked because they are spiritually
blinded. KEY TO GOD'S COMPASSION: v.4:11 - the wicked are spiritually and
morally blind
