LESSON - ROMANS 6:1-5 (NIV based)
THEME - Because we have
been justified (or declared righteous) by faith, we have POSITIONAL
SANCTIFICATION
Sanctification = the act of God setting
apart someone or something for holy use
------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.1 go on sinning? =
permit to sin?
v.2 We died to sin -
power of sin to control us has been broken
vv. 3-4 our old life of
obedience to the power of sin died with Christ
v.4 we have been freed
from the penalty & power of sin to live a new life
v.5 the means: we are
united with Christ
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Does this mean we no longer sin? A: No. see vv.11,12 do not let sin reign
Q: Does baptism mentioned in vv.3, 4 =
water baptism? A: No.
Baptism = identification; "to dip,
immerse"; regeneration thru union with Christ,
His death & resurrection
It illustrates & demonstrates the
inner work of salvation - see vv.2-3 - not justified
by water baptism Rom. 5:1.
Q: Do these verses imply that there is
power available to conquer sin in the believer's life? A: Yes. see Eph. 1:18-20
Q: If this is true that the power of sin
to control us has been defeated and a much more stronger power from God is
available to believers to live a new life which is victorious over sin, how do
we go about drawing on this power from God?
A: find in Rom. 6
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIG IDEA: Think about
this week: In the same way that we
cannot achieve salvation on our own, we cannot achieve a maximally sanctified
life without God's power and help.
Keeping in mind that God has declared us righteous even though we do not
deserve it, deep down inside do you & I truly desire to do whatever it
takes to completely draw upon God's power to the maximum to live a new,
sanctified life which is totally dead to sin?
Also to contemplate: Why
does sin continue to hold many believers in bondage?
