THEME - Place of the Law
in Sanctification

Q: What is the place of the Law in a
believer's life and one's efforts to achieve sanctification? Is it O.K. for believers to pretty much
ignore the O.T. Law?
v.7 the Law is not sin -
makes us aware of sin
vv.8-9 sin & sinful
desires are aroused by knowledge of the Law, otherwise sin is dead. We cannot achieve sanctification through the
Law
v.11 we become dead
under the Law - we cannot fulfill the perfect requirements of the Law
v.12 yet the Law is holy
Q: Does the Law cause death? A: no
v.13 the Law is not
death - it brought to life sin which produces death, it makes sin become
utterly sinful; the problem is not the Law but rather our sin

BIG IDEA: We should be
careful not to develop an attitude of moral indifference to divine Law - nor legalism. We should uphold the Law -
Rom. 3:31.
Assignment: Read the O.T. Law in Exodus 20-23 and Lev. 18-20 and let them
convict you. We should delight in the
Law - Rom 6:22. By GRACE, the deserved
punishments have been laid aside. Look
for the general principles behind the laws and try to make a modern day
application in only your own life. Let
them convict you and your habits, behavior.
Example: Exo. 20:8-11; 35:1-2 Sabbath -
death if work on it;
Exo. 21:28-30 a bull that gores -
dog
